This project aims to create a supportive network for scholars in anthropology and related fields, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange around World Anthropologies. We are building an academic community network to connect Taiwan’s anthropology with global conversations. This summer, we will hold two online workshops and an in-person writing retreat, bringing together scholars in anthropology and related disciplines to engage in discussions and collaborative writing centered on the theme: “Anthropologies in East and Southeast Asia in Dialogue with World Anthropologies."
🌏 八月線上工作坊 東亞場次: Worlding Korean Anthropology In and Outside Korea
➤ Time: 10:00 PM, August 26 (Taipei time)
➤ Invited Speaker: Prof. Heonik Kwon
Heonik Kwon is a Senior Research Fellow of Social Science and Distinguished Professor of Social Anthropology at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. Author of Ghosts of War in Vietnam (2008), The Other Cold War (2010), and After the Korean War: An Intimate History (2020), among others, his recent book, Spirit Power (2022), looks at Korea's colonial and Cold War experience from a religious cultural angle. His forthcoming new book explores the embeddedness of the idea of Earth in the concept of Society in a wide Asian terrain.
➤ Abstract: Taiwan and South Korea take up a unique place in Asis's long Cold War history. Whether the subject is kinship, religion or politics, their shared experience of the turbulent regional Cold War has had strong implications in anthropological research. In this talk, Prof. Kwon will reflect on these implications, focusing on interactions between the anthropology of Taiwan and that of Korea as well as in view of the changing geopolitical condition in the broad region today.
